Omas Milchreis / Rice Pudding

Omas Milchreis ( Granny's Rice pudding) is made in German style the way my granny and my mum prepared it for us since I can remember. Rice pudding is known under many different names

and popular all over the world. It is prepared in many different variations depending in what part of the world it is served. However it is the tradition in most countries to serve it as sweet dish usually with fragrant additions like orange zest, raisins, cardamom, vanilla, cinnamon, jams and fruit.

Omas Milchreis / Rice Pudding

  • 250 gram / 8.8 oz  short grain / sushi rice
  • 4 cups of full cream milk
  • 1 vanilla pod, halved or 2 tbs. vanilla essence
  • 4 tbs sugar
  • 1 tbs unsalted butter
  • 1 punnet fresh strawberries, quartered
  • 1 glas morello cherries, pitted
  • 1 cup raisins (Optional - Soak raisins for several hours in water - it makes them swell and become juicier)
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbs sugar

  • Melt butter in a large pot on the stove on medium heat
  • Briefly saute the rice in the butter
  • Add milk, sugar and vanilla pod and bring all to a boil, regularly stirring the contents of the pot to prevent it to burn or get stuck to the bottom of the pot
  • Once it is boiling reduce the heat to the smallest setting on your stove and let the rice stand for 30 minutes, lid closed
  • While the rice is standing, prepare strawberries and mix sugar with cinnamon
  • When the 30 minutes are up you can serve Omas milch Reis hot with cherries, raisins and strawberries or cinnamon and sugar mixture
  • The rice can as well be enjoyed after it has cooled down
